The Dominoes
Ray Columbus (Vocals), Andy Joines (Guitar), Billy Karaitiana (Bass) and Peter Ward (Drums)
In 1959 at 17 years of age, Ray Columbus tried putting together his first band, which he called The Dominoes. On drums was his good friend Peter Ward, along with Billy Karaitiana (later a.k.a. Billy Kristian) on bass. The identity of the original guitarist is unknown, but it is known that his tenure was short and he was quickly replaced by a very competent Andy Joines. The Dominoes played as a quartet around Christchurch for a while, but they didn't last too long, as quite quickly, Billy Karaitiana and Peter Ward left to join Saki and the Jive Five, a group which was also beginning to feature around the Christchurch area, and which was becoming serious opposition for Max Merritt and The Meteors. Max checked his opposition out — and very soon thereafter, Billy Karaitiana moved into a permanent position with Max Merritt and the Meteors. At that point Peter Ward also left The Dominoes after securing a position with The Downbeats, who were a more traditionally-styled dance band, headed up by pianist John (Doc) Foster. |
