The Gazzetters — made up of pupils of Hampstead School .....
Stu Scammell, Keith Holland, Don McQuarters and Peter Davison
The band's journey began with the Silver Band Talent Quest which was held every year and was very popular. The Gazzetters (Hampstead School) - pictured here are Stuart Scammell, Keith Holland, Don McQuarters and Peter Davison. They won the junior heat and were runners up in the final. It was the first time they had played anywhere (other than to school classes) and they had borrowed the music equipment from The Deaconaires, who at that time were one of the best bands in the South Island. The Deaconaires included Stuart Scammell's brother John Scammell on drums. Soon afterwards, they changed their name from The Gazzetters to Aces 4, then later to just The Aces. The prize for winning second place was a bike light from Omond and Steel, the bike shop in the Ashburton Triangle. Over the band's journey, these boys played with them - Russell McQuarters, Stuart Scammell, Keith Holland, Don McQuarters, Peter Davison, John Bell, Lindsay Liddington and Peter Campbell. Keith Holland was replaced by Peter Campbell on Rhythm Guitar. |
