The group was formed mainly from the old Claudy Yoctis band, in which Mclntyre, Ryan and Johnston played for some time. Penter, a former folk singer, made his first entry into rock music when he joined the group earlier that year. He replaced Graham Cleghorn who left to join the cast of the rock-musical Hair. Parkinson was with a group named Bombay Waters, which confined most of its appearances to local hotels and The Dux De Lux. He joined Claudy as bass guitarist when the encumbent, Simon Marks left. Despite those present changes, the group played as a complete unit with each member contributing his own musical talent.
Claudy had been resident at the Klub nightspot in Tuam Street for three months, and had also been engaged in some hotel work at The Cave Rock. The group first began playing before a university audience and generally emerged as a varsity band. They aimed to concentrate on material not previouslv used by other Christchurch bands. Drummer Simon Mclntyre believes the group's music can be likened somewhat to that of Santana. The group wants to combine solid instrumentation with good vocal work, and is fortunate that four of its five members can be used to take lead vocals, as well as combining for vocal harmony. Their harmonising ability, combined with their musicianship was obviously a key factor in their Battle of the Bands regional representation success last week-end. Although each member played to the best of his ability, the group did not want to get too serious. It performed together solely for the enjoyment each member received. McIntyre described it as "emotive playing". The group performed some of its own compositions during the Sunday finals gig, and McIntyre said any original songs were written as a group effort. was able to introduce an idea, and this would be improvised on as a result of contributions by each member. The end result may not satisfy everyone personally, but instead is met with general acceptance. |
