Garner Wayne - born and raised in Canterbury
One of New Zealand's greatest country music stars, singer/songwriter Garner Wayne died in Ashburton in 2007. The 86-year-old wrote more than 100 songs and made 300 recordings during a career that spanned almost 50 years. Garner Wayne and his Saddle Pals, and later Garner Wayne as a solo artist, were familiar sounds on the airwaves during the second half of the 20th century. Some of his better known hits included Love in a Fowlhouse and Birthday Wishes.
